Description:
Gustav Mahler composed many large-scale works. But in the summer of 1906, he surpassed himself with the "Symphony No. 8". He himself described this exceptional work in terms of form, shape, size and success as his "opus summum". The seemingly contradictory texts from the medieval hymn "Veni creator spiritus" and the final scene from Goethe's "Faust" are interwoven with guiding musical ideas and bear witness to the composer's enormous spiritual and religious aspirations. The concentrated sound power of a large symphony orchestra is complemented by three choirs and eight soloists who expand the orchestra throughout. Experienced conductor and accompanist Nicholas Kok has created a practical piano reduction to make rehearsals easier for singers and accompanists. Without unnecessarily simplifying the main orchestral parts and with particular attention to counterpoint and bass line, Kok has reduced the dense movement in order to create the most realistic sound possible for rehearsals. The rehearsal figures of standard orchestral materials have been taken into account so that the edition is compatible with existing sheet music.
