For the birth of Xavier Marie Joseph in 1753, the second son of the Dauphin Louis de Bourbon and his wife Marie-Josephin, the royal family organized a grand celebration and commissioned their court composer Jean-Philippe Rameau to write suitable music. The result was "Daphnis et Églé" (to a libretto by Charles Collé) as well as "Lisis et Délie" and "Les Sibarites" (to libretti by Marmontel). The pastoral "Daphnis et Églé" was only performed once and remained unpublished for a long time. The work on the theme of friendship contains an overture as well as instrumental movements in great variety.

The "Sibarites" have only survived in an incomplete copy by Rameau's pupil Jean Rollet, but all the dances have been reconstructed. Rameau appreciated the piece so much that he included it in the Paris production of his "Surprises de l'amour" in 1757. In addition to the dance movements from 1753, this edition offers those from 1757 in the appendix.
