Spirituals for String Choir and Orchestra draws upon the rich native heritage of Negro and White spirituals. There is very little literal quotation as such, but rather an attempt to realize the texture of this idiom. The movements embrace the different feelings and characteristics of this folk-expression. The first movement (Proclamation) has a dramatic-religious intensity. The second movement (Sermon) is a simple narrative - a sort of lyrical folk tale. The third movement (A Little Bit of Sin) is humorous, and good-natured. The fourth movement (Protest) is self-explanatory - bitter, grim and crying out. The last movement (Jubilee) is a festive and dance-like piece. Here we find the "Spiritual" idiom developed with some of its more contemporary rhythmic patterns. The string section is used as a choir, with antiphonal responses and accompanying development in the rest of the orchestra. The work, completed early in 1941, was first performed under the composer's direction, at the New York City Festival of American Music, February 19, 1941. Its first major orchestra performance was given by the Cleveland Symphony under the direction of Artur Rodzinski, who subsequently conducted the work many times.
