Description:
This piece was commissioned by the St. Andrew Orchestra in Edinburgh, which the composer conducted, to mark his retirement after 17 years. It is a concerto for orchestra, highlighting the various sections and individual musicians in turn, all within the confines of an amateur ensemble. The use of St. Andrew in the title prompted me to write tunes that have a distinctly Scottish character - St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. Performance notes: The orchestra has never had a permanent timpanist or percussionist, so these instruments play a relatively minor role. They can both be played by the same musician if required. For practical reasons, I have limited the timpani to two hand-tuned drums.
