Mendelssohn composed his first oratorio "Paulus" under the influence of the revival of J. S. Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" (1829), which he himself conducted. He integrated choral movements into "Paulus", which his contemporaries criticized as a break in style, as an inappropriate element of the church style. Despite these reservations, "Paulus" was probably his most popular work during Mendelssohn's lifetime and received numerous performances throughout Europe. Robert Schumann praised its "indelible coloration in the instrumentation" and its "masterly playing with all forms of the art of composition". He described it as a "jewel of the present".

The Carus edition is the first critical edition of the famous oratorio. It draws directly on the first edition edited by Mendelssohn and the autograph.

Thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra (arr. J. Linckelmann Carus 40.129/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
