The history of the creation of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 is marked by numerous revisions and conflicting sources, which continue to cause uncertainty in performance practice to this day. While the original version from 1873 is often considered long-winded, the commonly performed final version from 1889–90 suffers from massive interventions by third parties, particularly by Franz Schalk. This led to a dilution of the musical character and significant formal shortcomings, such as the omission of essential thematic complexes in the finale.

This "Final Concert Version" by Joseph Kanz follows Robert Haas’s editorial principles and aims to achieve a musical synthesis of the various versions. The goal of this arrangement is to correct the structural weaknesses of the late version by restoring the complete form of the finale and reversing unfavorable alterations in the instrumentation. In doing so, sonic details are carefully adapted to Bruckner’s mature style in order to achieve a score that is organic and faithful to the original.

This new edition is intended as a scientifically sound yet practical compromise that reveals the "true meaning" of the work based on the sources. Following successful premiere performances, the work is now available as a "Manuscript Edition" to offer orchestras a formally coherent and sonically optimized alternative for concert performance.
