Description:
Sibelius' beginning as a symphonist. The content of Jean Sibelius' first orchestral works is influenced by Finnish legends (Kullervo, En saga). Even a few years later, he initially planned a multi-movement program symphony entitled 'Life of a Dreamer' or 'Musical Dialogue'. It was not until the compositional phase leading up to the premiere in 1899, as the editor explains in his knowledgeable preface, that Sibelius set out on the path to 'absolute' orchestral music. After a fundamental reworking, the work finally established the young composer's fame: the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra took the 1st Symphony on its European tour in 1900, presenting it with resounding success at the World's Fair in Paris.
