Description:
In the fall of 1909, Sibelius wrote in his diary: 'At Koli! One of the greatest experiences of my life. Plans [for] 'La Montagne'! It turned out that these were plans for the Fourth Symphony. The composition process was not easy; according to the diary, Sibelius ultimately described it as a 'struggle with God'; just in time for the premiere in the spring of 1911, he managed to complete the work: 'My new symphony is a complete protest against the compositions nowadays. Nothing - absolutely nothing of the circus.' This extraordinary work was initially considered difficult to comprehend, though its technical brilliance won acclaim. Appreciation for the Fourth, however, increased over the years.
