In 1776, around ten years after Haydn took up his position at Esterházy Palace, he composed his Symphony in D major Hob. I:61, which is characterized by a fuller woodwind sound compared to the symphonies of the early 1770s. In the meantime, the chapel at the princely court had been expanded for opera productions, which enabled Haydn to use not only two bassoon parts, but also a flute part in all four symphony movements for the first time; after a long time, a flutist played in the chapel again from April 1776.

This is the only symphony from the years 1774 to 1776 of which Haydn's handwritten score has survived. The present edition is based on this main source.
