Menken and Glenn Slater to pen the songs.
The pair wrote the five songs, while Menken alone created the score. The songs are very catchy and range in style from Broadway rock to vaudeville. The score, written for a large orchestra, is richly layered with comedy, adventure, romance, and fantasy. This is a score written in the grand tradition of Hollywood swashbuckling adventures.
The soundtrack was recorded at the Eastman Scoring Stage under the baton of Michael Kosarin. More than 80 players and 20 singers gathered for 3½ days to record the music. The results are just as magnificent as any great Disney score.
