The musical text of the 1974 Strauss complete edition of the operetta "Die Fledermaus" is based on all relevant historical sources and eliminates some massive errors from earlier editions. The result is a strikingly purified, airy, almost understated Strauss. The performance material is a must for all orchestras who want to perform what is probably the most frequently performed operetta overture ever with authentically edited sheet music. The fact that the introductory orchestral piece has a French title corresponds to Strauss's terminology and fits in with other genre designations in his operettas (couplet, entreact).
