It is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s *The Magic Flute* was composed in 1791 for Emanuel Schikaneder’s Freihaustheater in Vienna and combines fairy-tale-like magical elements with Masonic ideas. In his final opera, Mozart displays the full range of his compositional skill: from the folk-inspired melodies in Papageno’s songs to Pamina’s heartfelt arias, the depth and serenity of Sarastro’s singing, and the virtuoso coloratura of the Queen of the Night.
