Description:
Richard Strauss composed his Horn Concerto No. 1, Op. 11, between 1882 and 1883. The work, which he wrote at the age of only eighteen and dedicated to his father, Franz Strauss—one of the most prominent horn players of his time—is now among the most popular works in the horn repertoire. Even here, the melodic talent and sonic sophistication that would later become the composer’s hallmarks are already evident. In this arrangement for solo tuba by Angelo Piazzini, the concerto takes on a new sonic dimension. The arrangement preserves the spirit of the original while bringing out the warmth, power, and cantabile expressiveness of the tuba. In this way, it offers a fresh perspective on this Romantic masterpiece.
