Description:
Édouard Lalo, known today primarily for his concert masterpieces, created with the ballet "Namouna" (1881–82) a work of exquisite finesse that inspired Claude Debussy’s lifelong enthusiasm. The "Valse de la cigarette" presented here is a particularly charming excerpt from this ballet, which—despite Lalo’s serious illness during its composition—was completed in time for the Paris Opéra with the support of colleagues such as Charles Gounod. While the scene caused a stir at the 1882 premiere due to dancers smoking on stage, the music captivates with its subtle shifts in tempo and a brilliant, crescendoing finale. This individual edition makes a masterpiece of French orchestral art accessible—one that, beyond the well-known suites, impresses with Lalo’s impeccable craftsmanship and his keen sense of tonal colors.
