The present edition has as its purpose the presentation of the works of Karol Szymanowski in form fully consistent with the composer's intentions, and is based on a comparison of the original sources, which are the autograph manuscripts and the first published editions. Any observed discrepancies are discussed in the Editorial Notes included at the end of each volume. The presnet edition also sets forth - in the form of variants given in the Editorial Notes those traditions of performance which originated during Szymanowski's lifetime and which had its approval. The complete edition consist of 20 volumes. Series A: Orchestral and Vocal Works (symphonies, concertos, cantatas and songs with orchestra), Volumes 1 (a,b,c,d) - 5; Series B: Instrumental Works (chamber music and music for solo instruments), Volumes 6-9; Series C: Vocal Works (songs for solo voice and choral songs), Volumes 1--12; Series D: Stoge Works (operas, ballets and music for dramas), Volumes 13-17. The works are suplemented by piano arrangements (volcal scores) of the orchestral works, operas and ballets. The First Violin Concerto Op. 35, was composed in 1916. In the score of the concerto there are a great many very typical features of Szymanowski's style in the middle period of his creativactivity, the style, which in its lavish wealth, surely constitutes the fullest expression of the composer's individuality. In the Second Violin Concerto, OP. 61, the general tendencies prevailing in his later work are recognizable, related to references to mountain folklore.
