Description:
Johannes Brahms composed the present work in the summer months of 1878 in Pörtschach am Wörthersee - originally in four movements, before he wrote self-deprecatingly to his friend Joseph Joachim: 'The middle movements have fallen - of course they were the best! But I will have a poor Adagio written for it.' The premiere took place on New Year's Day 1879 at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, conducted by the composer with Joachim as soloist. The first edition was published in the same year.
