His collection of 13 piano songs op. 34, Rachmaninov added a small final piece without any text three years later: Vocalise, which quickly became a worldwide success. Since its premiere in 1916, the melancholic and expressive piece has been distributed in countless external adaptations; however, only the two arrangements for voice and orchestra and for orchestra alone were made by Rachmaninov himself. With this edition, we are presenting the version for voice and orchestra in the Urtext for the first time, and can rely on the autograph sources in the Glinka Museum in Moscow and the Russian first edition of 1916. Smaller variants, compared to the piano version, are listed in the critical report.
