His collection of 13 piano songs op. 34, Rachmaninov added a small final piece without any text three years later: Vocalise, which quickly became a worldwide success. Since its premiere in 1916, the melancholic and expressive piece has been distributed in countless external adaptations; however, only the two arrangements for voice and orchestra and for orchestra alone, in which a group of 16–20 violins take over the solo part, were made by Rachmaninov himself. Rachmaninov created this second version after his escape from Russia, when he lived briefly in exile in Denmark in 1918. In doing so, he not only transposed the piece from C sharp minor to E minor, but also worked out a completely new orchestration that no longer has anything in common with the version for voice and orchestra. The main source of this first Urtext edition of the orchestral version is the first edition of 1919 published by Breitkopf & Härtel.
