Description:
As is known from Purcell's catalog of works, he wrote incidental music for a number of contemporary dramas. Some of these are vocal scenes, but most are sequences of short instrumental pieces: Overtures, interludes and pieces that were performed at appropriate points during the action. The present suite was composed by Purcell for the tragedy 'Abdelazer or the moor's revenge'. The bloodthirsty drama was written by Aphra Behn (1640-1689), the first English woman writer to earn her living by writing. Purcell's "Rondeau" was used by Benjamin Britten as the theme for his well-known "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra". The song "Lucinda is bewitching fair" is a later encore and is not included in the present edition
