Description:
Aria con variazioni, i.e. a theme and a series of variations, was written for tuba and any keyboard instrument and for tuba and string quartet or orchestra. The variations are based on an original melodic theme by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), here specially re-harmonized. The tuba, as we know, had not yet been invented at the time of the Baroque and Classical periods, so there is no original literature for this instrument from this era, apart from modern transcriptions of works written for other instruments at the time. In 1989 I wrote the "Variations in Olden Style" for solo tuba and string orchestra (Editions Bim TU8b/c) or solo tuba and piano (Editions Bim TU8a) with the express aim of offering tuba players an original work in the Baroque style. It was inspired by Corelli's violin sonatas and certain Handel works for keyboard instruments. I composed "Aria con variazioni" in the same spirit as the previous piece (Variations in Olden Style), but this time in the Classical style, inspired by Franz Josef Haydn's early string trios, quartets and sonatas.
