The title "Grand Chasseral" refers to a region of Switzerland also known as the Bernese Jura. The work was written for the administration and staff of the music school in this region, which is based in the city of St-Imier. However, there is no program or specific story associated with this music; it is an abstract composition in the classical tradition. The work consists of four movements. The introductory Andante begins in a melancholic mood but becomes increasingly energetic and passionate before returning to the contemplative atmosphere of the opening. The second movement, Allegretto, serves as a scherzo, though it is not consistently cheerful—the opening melody has a nostalgic quality. The third movement is slow and highly expressive, while the finale is exuberant and optimistic. Counterpoint is used extensively, yet without dampening the joyful mood. The work is scored for a full string orchestra but can be performed with at least nine soloists.
