Description:
Performed in the first act of Giuseppe Verdi's (1813-1901) opera, LA TRAVIATA, this famous duet is sung by the characters Violetta and Alfredo Germont, the young man who loves her, at a late-night party. A brindisi (drinking song), "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" ("Let's drink from the joyful cups"), is begun by Alfredo after Violetta encourages him to show off his voice, then he is joined by Violetta and the rest of the chorus at the party. One of the most well-known melodies in opera, this excerpt is a popular performance choice for tenors.
