Description:
I composed Prelude for the Ensemble Epoch. The solo violin has a somewhat peculiar melody consisting of a constantly repeated G#. The percussion consists of two instruments, the vibraphone and bells, both of which also use this G#. The strings repeat a harmonic constellation three times, but with each repetition it "grows" by one chord ...
Composers often have hidden thoughts in their music. In contrast, I chose the title "Prelude" in the hope that listeners would not be restricted by cues, but would be free to develop their own imagination. I have a vague suspicion that as a composer I can facilitate communication and understanding by giving listeners and performers more room for interpretation. Listening to the otherwise untitled Prelude, it seems easy for me to recognize the time and circumstances of its composition. Those who have experienced such moments will surely understand.
