Description:
Sibelius composed this short romance, lasting only five minutes, in C op. 42 in 1903; the work was premiered in Turku in March 1904. Sibelius later changed the originally rather neutral title "Andante for Strings" into a character designation that comes closer to the essence of the piece. It was written at the same time as the 2nd Symphony op. 43 and – like many a short piano piece – is to be understood as a by-product, so to speak, to which Sibelius applied a different compositional claim than to his tone poems or symphonies. Here the composer wrote a technically easy-to-master, graceful movement of a melody that is not typically Finnish, but nevertheless characteristic.
