The song was composed in 1959 for the John Marshall High School orchestra in Rochester, New York, during Richard Lane’s first residency as one of the first composers in the Young Composers Project. The work demonstrates Lane’s flair for lyrical melody and transparent string writing. The piece, approximately five minutes long, unfolds in a sweeping arc. It begins with a gentle Andante moderato, in which a flowing cantabile melody winds its way through the entire ensemble. Gradually gaining in intensity, the music gives way to a contrasting Allegro molto, which introduces greater rhythmic energy without compromising the work’s fundamentally lyrical character. The return of the opening tempo and material leads the composition to a quiet conclusion. Written during one of the most productive phases of Lane’s career, "Song" reflects the creative environment of the Young Composers Project, which encouraged composers to create high-quality repertoire for educational ensembles while simultaneously refining their own artistic language.
