Description:
Swan Song ("Labutí píseň") is a cantata by Juraj Filas based on two of the final sonnets from Francesco Petrarca's *Canzoniere* (Nos. 364 and 365). These penitential poems constitute a true swan song: Having reached the end of his life, the poet reflects on the years consumed by an earthly passion, repents his straying, and turns to heaven to implore salvation and a peaceful death. Filas translates this spiritual journey into music of great expressive intensity. The work progresses from meditative contemplation through the turmoil of repentance to a broad, luminous prayer, before returning to inner peace. The virtuosic, declamatory vocal line enters into a dialogue with the strings—at times dark, at times fervent—until the final confession is entrusted to God.
