Alexandre Guilmant is regarded as the first French Romantic organ composer to achieve international fame and make his numerous organ works known to a wide audience, e.g. through extensive tours of America and the meticulous care of the prints of his works. It may come as a surprise that even today there are still individual works from his pen that are difficult to access and have never even been printed, but this fact is finally put to rest with the present volume.
The leading international Guilmant expert Kurt Lueders has carried out extensive research to bring to light works that not only close a sensitive editorial gap, but are also of great benefit in today's liturgical and concert practice: "free" works with typical French-romantic flair, including, as a curiosity, a piece that Guilmant improvised in New York for recording by a "tonographer" ("Brooklyn") and which was subsequently transcribed into notation, through to compositions on Gregorian chant, which he held in such high esteem. A wide-ranging collection that will not only delight the "Francophile" organ lover!
