Es ist faszinierend zu beobachten, wie bei Homilius, der in Dresden wirkte und als Komponist nie in vorderster Linie stand, historisch bedeutende Entwicklungslinien zusammenlaufen. Homilius war Schüler Bachs und unterrichtete Johann Adam Hiller, Johann Friedrich Reichardt und Daniel Gottlob Türk, deren Einflüsse auf die Musik der Klassik nicht hoch genug eingeschätzt werden können. Der Organistenalltag kann durch die gut spielbaren Choralvorspiele von Homilius gewiß eine gezielte Bereicherung erfahren.
