Description:
This organ transcription (duration: 5') was inspired by Widor's "Mattheus Final" from "Bach's Memento," a collection of free arrangements. This arrangement is based in principle on Widor's arrangement, though it includes significant changes. Overall, the movement has been made somewhat more compact through the addition of further voices, giving it an even more "symphonic" character. The final nine measures have been completely rewritten. This provides a musical counterpart to the hopeful aspect of the Passion narrative. Surprisingly, despite its stylistically diverse elements, the work as a whole comes across as a fairly unified, impressively dramatic concert piece without any stylistic discontinuity.
