The fantasias were published in 1608. Frescobaldi dedicated his first work to his patron Francesco Borghese, who paid special attention to them.

Only one copy of the original print is still known; there are also two copies, one of which is complete and in the hand of Bernardino Pasquini.

Although the pieces are printed in 'partitura', i.e. each of the four parts on a special system, they were nevertheless intended by the composer for a keyboard instrument. Thanks to their reliability, it was possible to transpose them into today's standard notation (on two staves) without difficulty. In one place, however, where neither the original print nor the copies made Frescobaldi's intentions sufficiently clear, the partitura is given in the form of the original. The editor's additions are: all accidentals in smaller print outside the staves, as well as the letters to indicate the parts and the connecting lines to clarify the voice leading.
