Description:
A verse of the old Easter sequence "Victimae paschali laudes" from the 11th century begins with the contrast "Mors et vita": Death and life wrestle with each other. In his 12-minute work commissioned for Freiburg Minster in 2015, Zsigmond Szathmáry interprets this primal human experience with powerful sonic eruptions.
Here the organ is allowed to show what it can do: The size and power of the instrument are fully utilized, but the gentle and quiet contrast is not lacking either. Typical of Szathmáry's compositional style is the recitative-improvisatory style alternating with strictly rhythmic passages. The composer repeatedly takes up elements of the hymn "Christ is risen from the cross".
