Description:
The "Præludium (Basso ostinato) and Double Fugue to the Chorale" is the only major organ composition by the virtuoso Ferrucio Busoni. The prelude is in the form of a passacaglia; the four-part fugue is divided exclusively between the manual parts, to which a fictitious chorale is heard in the pedal. Building on his great role models Bach and Liszt, Busoni created a work with this impressive composition that already seems to clearly point to his later Fantasia Contrappuntistica, through which he was to have such a lasting influence on contemporary music. The highly romantic work appears here in a critical new edition based on the composer's manuscript and for the first time provides (concert) organists with a reliable musical text of this masterpiece.
