Description:
> Toccata and Fugue on a Hebrew Theme
> Long Lost - Finally Rediscovered
> with Detailed Preface, Biography and Critical Report by the Editor (English/german)
The story of a musical work could hardly be more dramatic:
Composed by a well-known Jewish cantor at a time when the Jews were persecuted in Germany. Completed and performed in 1931 and then almost lost during the terrible Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. In no time at all, the cantor Hugo Adler and his son rescued these and other notes from the already burning synagogue at the last second before fleeing. Then the trace of the work was lost.
In 2025, the Göttingen organist Martin Begemann and the Celle church musician and publisher Daniel Kunert went in search of traces. Martin Begemann was collecting information on a concert program with works by Jewish composers and had commissioned Daniel Kunert to compile lists of works. In the process, both also became aware of a library in New York. Thanks to the good cooperation with their colleague, the work, which was thought to be lost, was rediscovered there.
Begemann worked his way through the data, put the various fragments together and also made contact with Samuel Adler, the composer's son. His joy that his father's work was rediscovered and even republished was very great and the whole family supported the project with information, translations and other data.
And now the "Toccata and Fugue op. 11 on a Hebrew theme" is once again available to the music world, hopefully to be heard on many organs and to put this great Jewish organ music in the deserved focus.
