In contrast to Mozart’s childhood, very little was known until now about Johann Sebastian Bach’s youth—his early works, such as the cantata "Christ lag in Todesbanden" and the "Actus tragicus," reveal a composer who had achieved mastery at an early age, but not the path that led him there. In Weimar, Peter Wollny and Michael Maul discovered copies made by the twelve- to fifteen-year-old Bach of works by Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Adam Reinken. Following the facsimile, a transcription of the original tablature manuscript has now been published as a critical edition. It includes a detailed preface that discusses the source and the probable circumstances of its creation. With this edition, Reinken’s "An Wasserflüssen Babylon" is available for the first time in an authenticated musical text, and Buxtehude’s "Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g’mein"." Two chorale preludes by Pachelbel reflect the performance practices of the time; the numerous ornamentations may even have been added by Bach himself.
