Description:
In 1950, Dmitri Shostakovich traveled to Leipzig to serve as a judge at a piano competition marking the 200th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s death. One of the contestants, Tatyana Nikolayeva, agreed to perform a pair of the 48 Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and went on to win the gold medal. The following year, Shostakovich completed his own set of 24 preludes and fugues in all keys, which he dedicated to Nikolayeva. This volume contains the second part of the standard edition of this masterpiece for solo piano, featuring the Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, Nos. 13–24.
