These 3 Impromptus are excellent examples of a composer in full mastery of his art, capable of writing beautiful music at any level of difficulty. Impromptu I (without dedication, but most likely for a student) was written by Richard Lane in December 1972, at the age of 39. He wrote Impromptu II in June 1977 for Eric Neumann who reports: ' Richard Lane dedicated this piece to me as a reward for my successful graduation. I studied composition with him for three years and when my piano teacher retired, he also took over the piano lessons. It was thanks to him that I was accepted to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, his alma mater. He conceived this Impromptu II with my then dexterity in mind for the fast passages and my contemplative spirit for the slower ones. Impromptu III was written nine years later and is dedicated to Dahwei Kuo, certainly also one of his students. An elegant, cheerful and humorous piece, with some subtle technical challenges. The numerous as yet unpublished piano works (also for 2 pianos or 4 hands) are successful pieces that will gradually be published exclusively by Editions Bim in the coming years.
