This edition of Bach’s 6 English Suites (BWV 806–811) was edited by Alfred Kreutz. The title "English Suites" is generally attributed to the fact that Bach is said to have written them for an English nobleman. This information is supported solely by the notation "Fait pour les Anglois" on the title page of the A major Suite; however, if Bach had truly composed the suites "on commission," more details of the commission would likely have survived—as in the case of the Goldberg Variations. It is more likely that the suites became known as "English" among Bach’s students and friends to distinguish them from the shorter French suites, and perhaps also because they vaguely drew on certain musical styles from England. E. Dannenreuther, author of *Musical Ornamentation Vol. 1* (1893), pointed out how closely the "English Suites" resemble those of the *Six Suites de Clevcin* by Ch. Dieupart, who was active in London from 1707 until his death. In fact, Bach was familiar with Dieupart’s suites and even copied them out by hand.
