In the Baroque era, the term clavier was used to describe all keyboard instruments: virginal, clavichord, harpsichord, fortepiano and others. The Bärenreiter Piano Album 'Baroque' offers a representative selection of the most important forms of Baroque keyboard music from England, Italy, France and Germany. The anthology, which is organized according to these four countries, is illustrated with pictures of historical instruments that convey an idea of the typical music-making practice of the respective country.

The chronological framework ranges from the Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi , whose keyboard works exemplify the stylistic transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, to the English Virginalists and the French Clavecinists, to the epochal works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to the national characteristics, piano students learn about the different phases of the early, high and late Baroque as well as the most important genres such as dance movements and polyphonic pieces (fugue).

In the selection, particular emphasis was placed on the playability of the pieces on the modern piano. As the baroque ornamentation requires a special execution for each composer, practical suggestions are printed within the musical text.

Practice-proven fingerings ensure that the book can be used optimally in lessons.
