Kevin Olson

Cooler by the Lake

Anyone who has spent time in Chicago knows the familiar refrain: "It's cooler by the lake." When summer heat settles over the city, Lake Michigan offers a welcome breeze and a moment of calm along the shoreline. Kevin Olson captures that atmosphere in this late intermediate piano solo, evoking the gentle motion of waves and the expansive feeling of the lake beside a vibrant skyline. Flowing melodic lines and shimmering textures create a sense of movement and space, while lyrical phrasing invites expressive playing. Cooler by the Lake balances energy and relaxation, reflecting the contrast between the bustle of the city and the refreshing coolness that drifts in from the water. With approachable technical demands, this Late Intermediate level solo provides pianists with an engaging piece that paints a musical picture of Chicago's lakeside charm. A place where a simple breeze off Lake Michigan can transform a summer day.
