Jean Sibeliusʼ arrangements of the "Finnish Folk Songs" for piano first appeared in print in 1903. Sibelius had originally planned to arrange the songs for string orchestra. It is not known why he changed his plans. It is also unclear whether Sibelius only used the melodies in the composition or whether he also "thought along" the texts of the songs in the pieces. In any case, the melodies of the folk songs used were probably relatively well known in Finland at the time of composition. Today they give us an insight into a bygone era, into the melancholy world of Finnish myths and into traditional instrumentology: song no. 4, for example, refers to the kantele, a Finnish instrument that sounds similar to the zither.
