Description:
The forest as a Romantic ideal space also plays an important role in this cyclically organized whole through the planned arrangement of the keys and motivic relationships between the individual pieces: rustling trees and springs, singing birds, lonely wanderers, the sound of hunting and horns, darkness and nocturnal silence - that mysterious mixture of security and threat - are the recurring motifs. In the present edition, a detailed preface provides information on the history of the composition, while the Critical Notes comment not only on the readings of the autograph and first edition, but also on Schumann's sketches for individual pieces, draft titles and originally planned literary mottos and their origins.
