Description:
Ravel discovered in Aloysius Bertrand’s compilation of poems Gaspard de la nuit (1842) a world of shadows, irony, and imagination that spoke directly to his own artistic sensibility. From these poetic "fantasies in the manner of Rembrandt and Callot" he created one of the most original piano works of the early twentieth century. Composed in 1908 and premiered the following year, Gaspard de la nuit unites poetry and music with exceptional intensity. Each of its three movements reflects a poem, translating its imagery into sound with both precision and daring. This new edition benefits from a historical introduction and critical commentary by Edmond Lemaître, a renowned scholar and musicologist, widely respected for his meticulous research and deep insight into early 20th-century French music.
