Tom Turpin was a physically imposing man from Savannah, Georgia. In his youth, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and opened a successful saloon with his older brother Charles, which served as a meeting place for local musicians and a place where the local ragtime scene flourished. He later held public office as a deputy constable and became one of the first African Americans in his town to hold political power. The environment in his saloon helped cultivate his own ragtime preferences and led to him becoming the first African American to publish a ragtime. His "Harlem Rag", published in 1897, was completed in 1892 and thus predates Joplin's own significant ragtime debut.
