Description:
Single piano edition with text by Ludwig Uhland.
"Der gute Kamerad" was written by Ludwig Uhland in 1809 and set to music by Friedrich Silcher in 1825. As a song, it is better known by the opening line of the first verse: "Ich hatt' einen Kameraden" (I had a comrade).
The song is also common in English, French, Italian and Spanish translations in non-German-speaking countries and is a traditional song of the armed forces in some countries (e.g. Chile and Bulgaria).
The song was written in 1809 under the impression of the deployment of Baden troops under French command against rebellious Tyroleans, whereby Uhland had relationships with both sides. Although the poem had already been set to music, Friedrich Silcher altered a Swiss folk song to create the version we know today.
