Description:
Beethoven's Sonata op. 10/1 was composed over a lengthy period from 1795 to 1798, during which the composer vacillated between four and three movements for a long time. Beethoven had considered two piano pieces in C minor (WoO 52 and 53) as potential third movements before the finale, until he finally gave preference to a version in three movements without a menuet. The present edition presents the two discarded pieces for the first time in the appendix, not in order to play the sonata with 4 or even 5 movements, but as a suggestion for the conception of a piano recital in which both the three-movement sonata op. 10/1 and the two piano pieces can be played together.
