Description:
Lūcija Garūta (1902-1977) was one of the leading pianists of her generation, returning to her native Latvia after studying with Alfred Cortot and Paul Dukas in Paris in the 1920s. She was a committed piano pedagogue during her lifetime, teaching students at the Latvian Conservatory of Music. She composed a number of important works not only for piano - most notably the powerful cantata, Dievs,Tava zeme deg! (God, Thy Earth is Aflame!) - composed in 1943 in the middle of war-torn Riga. This collection is ideal for pianists at an easier level of ability, and includes beautifully crafted arrangements of Latvian folksongs. Highly recommended
