Samson François, one of the most emblematic French figures in the art of the piano, left sketches of his work Magie Noire as well as a partial recording. Dimitri Tchesnokov's musical reconstruction of this finely conceived work brings it to life here. At once virtuoso, poetic and mysterious, Magie Noire reflects Samson François's state of mind, reveals his pianistic genius and allows us to delve into the imagination of the composer he was.

A booklet designed around this work, rich in illustrations, historical presentation and quotations, accompanies the score.

Four years after the first performance of his concerto in 1951, Samson François gave a concert performance of the 2nd and 3rd Magie Noire, composed in 1951 and 1952. In a review by Suzanne Demarquez in the concert programme, we learn that these Magie Noire de have "the sole purpose of serving the instrument and of which he is one of the great masters". She explains that although these three Magie Noire do not represent any known literary text, they are inspired by the poetry "inherent in every creative artist".

Dimitri Tchesnokov reconstructed these three pieces from the composer's sketches. They were more like poems forming a single cycle entitled Magie Noire. Although the title expresses Samson François's intentions unambiguously, the challenge was to render the meaning as faithfully as possible.
The difficulty of the task was to translate the composer's musical ideas without betraying them, while at the same time allowing the performer all the freedom they afforded by the chiselled work of musical notation. In taking up this particularly precise challenge, Dmitri Tchesnokov has demonstrated a remarkable intuitive musical sense, without which this precious musical heritage could not have been reborn. As a result, Samson François's "états d'âme" from Magie Noire are now accessible to everyone.
