After To the Lighthouse, for string quartet, Night and Day, for piano, in three independent movements, is once again a title that refers to a novel by Virginia Woolf. With its nods to Steve Reich, the first movement immediately introduces an atmosphere of tonicity and rhythmic vivacity. A contemplative meditation, the second movement draws us into tense, almost poisonous harmonies, its serpentine melodic lines bathed in a twilight climate. As for the third movement, it hints at Stravinsky's wiggles, as well as James Brown's rock, pop and funk.
