Alexander Grechaninov devoted his 91-year life to musical research and composition, remaining true to his own artistic ideals. Despite an unprivileged background, his talent flourished as if guided naturally toward music. Alongside fellow Russian composers such as Rachmaninoff and Kastalsky, he pursued a shift from German and Italian influences toward a distinctly Russian idiom, often marked by the use of sustained bass sonorities. His greatest legacy, however, lies in his pioneering research into medieval Russian church music, preserving and advancing the tradition of Russian Orthodox sacred music despite limited recognition and a lack of external support. Grechaninov’s works for children are imbued with rich, traditional Russian melodies, evoking inward and beautiful imagery, and expressing the essential beauty of song, prayer, and a sense of spiritual purification. This book includes additional fingering designed for young learners with small hands, allowing the music’s fresh sonorities and playful rhythms to be enjoyed fully. Pedal markings have been added selectively, supplementing the original indications where necessary.
