Description:
'My piano piece was inspired by a jigsaw puzzle: the idea that a simple picture, consisting of many small, similar elements, can be put together not only in the traditional way, but by mixing the elements, an exciting, but less concrete, interesting textured pattern can be created from the original motifs. The resulting image can take a thousand different forms, from a slightly distorted version of the original to an image containing a still recognizable motif to a completely abstract one. In this piece, the elements of the puzzle were the motifs, rhythms and ornamentation of Hungarian folk music, as well as various details of the 1:2 model scale used in Bartók's musical language, which sometimes recognisably and sometimes less recognisably present a difficult task for the performer in terms of virtuosity and musicality.' (Mátyás Papp) The work won third prize at the 2024 Bartók World Competition for Composers at the Budapest Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and is the mandatory piece at the 2025 Bartók World Competition for Pianists. It was first performed by József Balog at the gala concert closing the composer's competition on November 23, 2024, in Budapest.
